SHIRIN NESHAT. The Home of My Eyes

Shirin Neshat’s exhibition ‘The Home of My Eyes’ continues to be very successful at the Museo Correr, which, with this show, further enriches the cultural offering in St Mark’s Square. Shirin Neshat, Iranian, born in 1957, lives and works in New York. She studied art in Los Angeles in the years of the Iranian revolution, around 1978-79, and from America saw her country of origin become Islamised in the 1990s. Awarded at the 1999 Venice Biennale, as Treccani writes: ‘Neshat has asserted herself at an international level as one of the most representative contemporary artists in exploring the complexity of social conditions within Islamic culture, turning a particular look at the role women have here. Precisely the condition of the Islamic woman, her relationship with the male world and more generally the relationship of Islamic culture with that of the West have thus become the central nodes of her artistic research’. A few days ago the Iranian artist staged Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida with Anna Netrebko and Riccardo Muti at the prestigious Salzburg festival (Salzburger Festspiele). An extraordinary show that won great public and critical acclaim. The artist presents a cycle of 55 photos in the exhibition, conceived and taken between 2014 and 2015 and never before shown in Europe; apart from Roja (2016), they represent Neshat’s most recent work. They are photographic portraits of individuals living in various parts of Azerbaijan - which reminded the artist of her home country, Iran - each one with a different religious belief but all, in the installation, presented as part of the same community. It is a very moving and evocative exhibition that certainly deserves a visit. The exhibition is open until 26 November 2017 from 10am to 7pm.
