NEW YEAR’S EVE IN ST MARK’S SQUARE FOR 100,000 PEOPLE

St Mark’s Square stood up to the invasion of thousands of people who celebrated the arrival of 2017 in the square watching the fireworks that lit up St Mark’s Basin at midnight. There was a considerable presence not only of local police but also the other forces of law in the Square and surrounding areas, also due to the recent events in Berlin that led to a reinforcement in anti-terrorism checks. Business owners were worried about the possibility of firecrackers being let off in the city, so also in the Square, given that no council ruling had been made on this despite the local regulations. Spokesman of this dissatisfaction was the deputy chairman of the Associazione Piazza San Marco Claudio Vernier, who in the year’s last issue of the Corriere Veneto pointed out the dangers related to the use of firecrackers and bangers in delicate areas like St Mark’s Square and the absence of suitable entertainment to accompany the wait for midnight. Luckily everything went ahead without any particular problems and entertainment and high spirits won the day.
