LA NUOVA VENEZIA: 100 MILLION EURO PROJECT READY TO ISOLATE ST MARK’S SQUARE FROM THE HIGH TIDES

According to Alberto Vitucci, journalist at La Nuova Venezia, which today dedicated two pages to the projects to safeguard the city, the new president of the former Magistrato alle Acque di Venezia, now the Provveditorato alle Opere Pubbliche, Roberto Linetti, relaunched the idea at a public meeting of acting as soon as possible to safeguard St Mark’s Square from the high tides. The Provveditorato, in agreement with the Commissari del Consorzio Venezia Nuova, has decided to take up the old project to waterproof the Square, about which we have spoken many times in previous news items and which the Association analysed in its Dossier on the high tides in the Square published last year. This project, according to Linetti, should be reviewed and amended but would represent a good starting point. The works would cost 100 million euros, which would be available, according to Linetti, thanks to the Legge Speciale per Venezia. The project would allow the quays and the subsoil to be raised and guarantee the restoration of 42 private businesses. In the meantime, the Venice city council has found 70,000 euros, thanks again to the Legge Speciale, to act against the subsidence of the paving in the Square, another serious problem not to be underrated.
